Updates and Homework for 2/13:

All Students:
There will be a mandatory Preseason Baseball Meeting on Wednesday, February 25, 2009 right after school in the café.

SPRING SPORTS SIGN-UPS are scheduled for Wednesday, March 4, 2009. Coaches meetings from 6 to 6:30 p.m., sign-ups in the café from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Forms are available on the table in front of the main office. If you are interested in playing a spring sport, please come to the coaches meeting and sign up on Wednesday, March 4.

Agenda: keynote speaker: questions & answers, updates on school resource officer funding; summary of Teen Drug Recognition, a community prevention approach; Addiction in the family: What is the risk and how can we reduce it?

Attention parents and students: Whittier Interviews have been rescheduled for March 5th at 8:30am. If you are still interested in applying the application deadline has been changed to February 27th.

Mongeau: Debate tomorrow on the question, “Does the United States have the right to limit civil rights of certain Americans during a National Emergency? (based on the famous supreme court case, Korematsu v. United States. Students need to have 2 pieces of research read and highlighted. They also have to list 5 key points on a separate sheet of paper that support his/her position. Dress to impress!

Grade 7:
Mrs. Hickey’s classes:
Students in A and B blocks should have completed questions 1, 2, and 3 out of the 7 questions listed on the bottom of the typed notes I gave them. Most students finished these in class, but those who did not should complete them for homework- complete sentences, no pronouns used as subjects of the sentence. This work is part of the page 42 lab we are doing tomorrow “Earthworm Responses” Blocks E and F had short blocks today, so this may be homework for them tomorrow night if the work is not completed in class. It is likely that all classes will have homework associated with the lab tomorrow night, due Friday.

SCIENCE - Complete the 1st five sections of the Earthworm Response Lab Report using page 42 in your text. This includes: Title, Objective, Hypothesis, Materials & Procedure, following the lab Report Format handed out in class. This will prepare each student for tomorrow's lab activity. The final Lab Report is due on Friday and will be equivalent to a test grade.

GAME DAY: The SADD ( Students Against Destructive Decisions) is hosting a Game Day for Middle School students on Tuesday, February 10, 2009 in room 3070 ( Ms. Difruscio’s room) from 2:30 until 4:00pm. Come have some fun playing board games with high school students. Snacks will be provided. Door prizes too!

This work is in preparation for the “Earthworm Responses” experiment that appears on page 42. We are doing the experiment on Thursday and Friday.

Students should be able to demonstrate their understanding of topography , using their handouts, by matching contour lines of equal intervals with a profile (refer to both sides of page 5), key concepts and terms (page 2), rules for reading topographic maps (page 3), what does a saddle/pass look like (page 6)?

Mrs. Hickey-
Blocks E and F do not have homework tonight. Blocks A and B are to write the title, objective, materials and hypothesis for the experiment on page 42 of their text. I wrote the format on the board, and students need to read pages 39-41 so that they can develop a hypothesis. These 4 parts of the lab are worth 25 points (of 100) for our next lab report on earthworm responses.
Blocks A and B finished the planaria labs today; blocks E and F will complete them tomorrow and have the above homework tomorrow night.

Mrs. Weldon: All Classes: Rough Draft Personal Experience ---from the viewpoint of a character from Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry: Chapter 11 - E-Block: Discussion questions #1-6; A,B, and F Blocks: Discussion questions #1,14,16,17, and 23.

Grade 6:
Mrs. Harrington: Due: Tuesday—complete the other side of the “Knuckle-Up” worksheet, “Map Symbols.” Be sure to use your textbook (page 30) for a guide. Due: Wednesday—“Topography” quiz (in-class). Use pages 2-6 as your study guide.

Mrs. White: Read 20 minutes and record in log; C Block- Write 5 homographs; D Block-Book covers; F Block-Strategy 1; G Block-Worksheet, signed log and paragraph.
