Updates and Homework for 1/9:

All Students:
Dear Parents and Students, We'd like to celebrate our line-up of teachers and school staff on Thursday, January 29 with a Super Bowl Luncheon for our Super Staff! We are looking for donations of crocks of soup, salads, breads/crackers, desserts and beverages. Please contact Heather Hartford at heatherh33@comcast.net if you are able to assist us with donations. We are also looking for assistance with set up and clean up the day of the luncheon. All paper products will be supplied by the PTA. Mrs. Bailey: All students need to bring the free choice book to class for silent reading. Book reports are due January 28th. Students have chosen the format each want to follow.
Students with outstanding vocabulary assignments must bring in finished work by tomorrow, Friday, 1-9-09. Students also have a lesson 13 worksheet to do for homework tonight.

Mrs. Mongeau: study guide given for quiz on chapter 13 sections 1 & 2.

Mrs. Hickey’s classes:
For all classes: Students should be studying for a quiz on animal cells they will have next Tuesday, January 13th. Students have the same cell diagram that will appear on the quiz, as well as the list of cell parts (organelles) and their functions. We will review over the course of the next few days as well. This week we are beginning to learn how to use a compound microscope. We are also studying animal symmetry. If you sent me an email between December 22nd and today, I had a problem with my computer and I am just getting to those emails. Hopefully I will catch up by tomorrow. Sorry.

Mrs. Harrington: Due: Friday—Students should be finalizing their volcano/earthquake booklets. Volcano/Earthquake/Tsunami Project; Handouts for model recipes have been distributed to the students who asked for them. Friday’s class is an open class for project work
Due to the snow day the date for your booklet and model has been extended to Tuesday, Jan. 13. Scaling your model will not be required but rather an option--2 points extra credit.

Mrs. White: Read 20 minutes and record in log; A & D blocks-Strategy I and 2 due Friday; Book orders due 1/12.

Mrs. Fulton’s 6th grade classes are finishing up their Portfolio’s entitled “My Nutritional Guide to Good Health.” If they have brought them home to work on, please make sure that they bring them to class to turn in, as this project will be a significant part of their grade for this quarter.

All Grades:
Attention Parents: The Georgetown SEPAC is hosting a Parent Coffee hour with State Representative Barbara L'Italien, this Friday, January 9 at 12:00, at the Georgetown Library. Rep. L'Italien is a strong advocate for special education and any parent wishing to learn more about special education in our state or voice their concerns or opinions are encouraged to join us. Bye Bye Birdie rehearsals this week will be Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday for all cast and crew, from 2:30-4:30 in the auditorium. Please make sure all your lines are memorized! Also, if you have left the play for any reason, you must return your music and script binder to Mrs. Viera or Mrs. Laflamme by the end of THIS WEEK.

From Mr. Kaminsky: Middle school jazz band will not meet this week. The first middle school jazz band rehearsal will be next Wednesday, January 14 @ 2:30 PM.

Grade 8:
Mrs. Bailey: All students must have a book report book in class by tomorrow, Wednesday. This month it is a free choice book and should be brought back and forth to school as the students will be given some class time to read. All exercises for lesson 13 in vocabulary are due to be corrected on Thursday. We are currently working on our “Achieving the American Dream” course of study. It is a smooth follow up to the Overcoming Adversity topic that we just finished. If any families have an immigration story to tell, please feel free to contact Michelle Bailey and maybe we can arrange a visit to share your story with the students.

Mrs. Weldon: Vocabulary from Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry- Section I (Chapters 1-3); Due Thursday: Vocabulary Lesson 13—Note Cards and Exercises

Mrs. Hickey: I returned a number of assignments to students in all classes. Students are to check to see which assignments they did not receive back graded or checked. If they failed to turn the assignment in, it will be accepted tomorrow. If the assignment was not done, they have tonight as an opportunity to do the assignment for full credit. The assignments were listed on the board, and students were supposed to copy the list into their notebook and check these assignments against those that were returned today.These assignments represent work done between December 11th and December 16th. The only assignment that has not been corrected is the animal cell model that we worked on in class on December 17, 18, 19, and 22nd. These should be graded by the end of the week.

Grade 6:
Mrs. Carminito: A Block: practice 5-8 worksheet #17-25; D Block & E Block: complete 6-3 worksheet, quiz Thursday; F & G Block: complete 6-5 worksheet.

Mrs. Harrington: Due Wednesday—try your best to complete the questions in the volcano/earthquake packet. Have your parents sign-off on any questions you are unable to answer. Begin to think about the layout for your table of contents. (I recommend using part of your questions as headings for the table—for example, Location of volcano……………page 1, Date or Dates of eruptions……..page 2, Type of volcano………….page 3). Also, begin to locate some pictures that you would like to include in your booklet.

Mrs. Lamoly: 1. Vocab Lesson 20 pp. 130-131Rdg. Comp.; True or False; and Finish the Thought; 2. Summarize Myth, Legend, Folklore or story about earthquake/volcano for Science project.

Mrs. White: Read 20 minutes and record in log; C Block- Write 5 sentences using “ity” or “ize” words. Each sentence must have 12 words in it.

We’ll need them for our new unit on Elements, Molecules, and Compounds.***REMINDER: We will have a two-part mid-term test on Thurs., Jan. 15th and Fri., Jan. 16th on all material from September until the day of the test. You will get a review packet this week. Also, we will have a mini-review each day. I will hold after-school review sessions on Tues., Jan. 13th AND Wed., Jan. 14th.

MATH - B-block - Complete the Fraction Practice worksheet we began in class, and Reteach 5-4 worksheet # 5-19 odd. Quiz corrections due tomorrow. E-block - Reteach 5-4 worksheet, #5 - 19 all. Quiz corrections due on Wednesday.

Mrs. Weldon: A and B Blocks: Vocabulary Lesson 13; choose someone who you think is a skilled orator, and list two reasons why you feel they communicate effectively. Ms. DiFruscio: STUDY CHAPTER 3 SECTION 3 B GUIDED READING FOR QUIZ TOMORROW. Review Chapter 3 Project Requirements. Come to class tomorrow with your decision about which option you will do:
Create a Game that teaches about the LIFESTYLE rules of the Jewish religion. (individual or with 1 partner). This should include visuals and information/facts about diet, education and worship. Jewish Holiday Lesson (individual or with 1 partner). Give an interactive presentation to your class that will teach them about 1 Jewish Holiday. This should include the history behind the holiday, how the holiday is celebrated, and an activity that allows audience participation for “hands on learning”. Please not that each holiday will be assigned only once per class period. I will assign these on a first come first serve basis.
Write & Illustrate an Educational Children’s Book on Religious Dietary Restrictions-
No partners for this project. This should include information about at least 3 religions including Judaism; illustrations; a glossary; explanation and fact about the restrictions.

Mrs. Lyon: sixth grade computer students are winding down the term. They have been practicing using email by emailing with me and they have learned how to attach a file to an email. This is very useful for sending computer work from school to home and vice a versa. Students will be taking a timed typing test at the end of class. Any practice they can do at home will be very helpful. The web site http://www.gamequarium.com/ has several useful programs for students to practice their keyboarding at home.
