From the Health Office

We have noticed a considerable increase in students with “influenza-like illness” (ILI) this week. Again, most providers are not testing for H1N1 so “influenza-like illness” (cough, sore throat, headache) with a fever of 100 or greater are thought to be probable H1N1. The “seasonal flu” does not peak until mid-winter so it stands to reason that flu symptoms at this time of year are caused by H1N1.

It is recommended that every household have a thermometer and use it if their child is feeling ill. A fever of 100 or greater is an important sign of the flu. Please do not send your child to school with a fever. If your child has a fever over 100 they should not return to school until they have been 24 hours fever-free without the use of fever-reducing medicines such as Tylenol, Motrin or Advil. This is for your child’s protection as well as the health of others. If your child returns to school too early they are more susceptible to other viruses.

When calling your child in absent, it would be greatly appreciated if you could inform us of your child’s symptoms. Continued frequent hand washing and proper cough etiquette are highly encouraged both at home and at school.

Thank you for your cooperation. Please contact Mary Beth Doherty/School Nurse @ X520or Beth Desrochers/School Nurse Leader @ X517 with any questions or concerns.

STUDENTS: Please check the lost and found table for your belongings. The table is overflowing with books, clothing and other items. At the end of first semester, any unclaimed clothing items will be donated to those in need.

Mrs. Hickey:
I did not send updates on Thursday or Friday of last week as I was not here. There is no homework tonight. I do have a few students who are completing work they started last week. Either they were absent when I collected it, or I was not here to go over it. I did return 2 lab reports (assuming students turned them in by last Wednesday). One lab report was about diffusion (cornstarch and iodine used). The second lab report involved osmosis (potatoes and salt used). Each lab report counted 2 times toward the student’ lab average. If students were absent for a lab, I spoke to them today about making it up or eliminating it from the average. Thank you.

The Arson Watch Reward Program is pleased to announce its annual fire safety poster contest. If you are interested in entering this contest, please stop by the middle school office for more details.

AAA is pleased to announce its annual traffic safety poster contest. If you are interested in entering this contest, please stop by the middle school office for more details.
